The National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT) hosted the Asia-Pacific Metrology Summer School 2026 on Fibre-Optic Measurements from 7–11 September 2026.
The five-day programme focused on the metrology of optical fibres and the measurement principles of Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs). It also provided a platform to promote the newly issued guidelines for OTDR calibration among secondary laboratories and National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) organisations in Thailand, supporting the wider adoption of reliable and traceable fibre-optic measurements.
The programme was designed to align with the requirements of the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA), contributing to the development of internationally recognised measurement capabilities and supporting the reliability of telecommunications infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific region.
The Summer School brought together participants from six countries — Lao PDR, Mongolia, Malaysia, India, Papua New Guinea, and Viet Nam — as well as participants from Thailand, providing an opportunity for experts and metrologists to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and strengthen regional cooperation in fibre-optic measurement.
The programme was officially opened by Police Lieutenant General Dr Pornchai Suteerakune, Director of NIMT, at the Novotel Bangkok Future Park Rangsit, Pathum Thani, Thailand.
Through hosting the Summer School, NIMT strengthened its role as a regional centre for knowledge exchange and capacity building in advanced optical and telecommunications metrology. The programme also enhanced NIMT’s engagement with metrology institutes and NQI organisations across the Asia-Pacific region, while supporting the development and dissemination of measurement capabilities that contribute to Thailand’s future digital and telecommunications industries.
