Dr. Jariya Buajarern, Metrology Expert, and Dr. Sivinee Sawatdiaree, Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Manager, from the National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT), participated in the Joint Visioning Workshop on ASEAN Metrology between ACCSQ WG3 and the Expert Group on Metrology (EGM). The workshop was held from 30–31 March 2026 in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia.
The workshop aimed to develop a shared ASEAN Metrology Vision and strengthen collaboration between Working Group 3 (Legal Metrology) and the EGM. Discussions focused on identifying synergies between the two groups, aligning post-2025 strategies, and enhancing the role of metrology in supporting regional economic integration, digital transformation, and sustainability goals.
Key highlights from the workshop included the concept of “holistic metrology,” emphasizing that metrology extends beyond traditional classifications of scientific, industrial, and legal metrology. Participants recognized its critical role in supporting economic development, innovation, environmental sustainability, and emerging sectors such as digital technologies and electric vehicles.
The workshop also addressed current structural limitations, noting that existing frameworks do not fully cover the needs of rapidly evolving industries and innovation-driven sectors. Participants emphasized the importance of bridging gaps between regulatory (top-down) and market-driven (bottom-up) approaches, while balancing national sovereignty with regional harmonization to facilitate trade and build mutual trust.
Through a series of interactive group exercises, participants explored how metrology can better support ASEAN priority sectors, strengthen Quality Infrastructure (QI), and contribute to broader regional objectives. Discussions also highlighted the need for closer integration between metrology, standards, accreditation, and conformity assessment systems.
The workshop concluded with a shared direction for the ASEAN Metrology Vision, which aims to establish an integrated and dynamic metrology ecosystem that supports fair trade, consumer protection, and innovation across the region.
NIMT’s participation in this workshop reflects its continued commitment to advancing regional cooperation in metrology and contributing to the development of a robust and future-ready ASEAN metrology system.
