NIMT Expert Contributes to International Knowledge Exchange on Temperature Metrology in Uzbekistan

NIMT is pleased to share the successful completion of a technical knowledge exchange activity by Ms. Panatda Panpech, Metrology Expert from NIMT, conducted at the Uzbek National Institute of Metrology (UzNIM).

This activity was carried out under the trilateral collaboration between NIMT, UzNIM, and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), as part of PTB’s project “Supporting the Reform of the National Quality Infrastructure II in Uzbekistan.”

From 3 to 14 November 2025, Ms. Panatda served as the expert for a technical programme on the realization of fixed points and the calibration of Standard Platinum Resistance Thermometers (SPRT) in accordance with the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90). The programme combined theoretical and practical sessions, covering:

  • Principles of SPRT calibration and measurement uncertainty evaluation
  • Practical realization of fixed points from Mercury to Aluminium, including Water Triple Point and Gallium
  • Data processing, uncertainty calculation, and technical discussion sessions

The training aimed to strengthen technical capabilities and promote effective knowledge transfer to UzNIM staff, contributing to the sustainable development of temperature metrology in the region.

This successful activity reflects NIMT’s continued commitment to international cooperation and its active role in supporting capacity building among partner National Metrology Institutes.

 

NIMT Expert Supports Environmental and Climate Monitoring Capacity in Indonesia

Dr. Nunnapus Laitip, Metrologist from NIMT, successfully carried out an expert consultancy mission to Jakarta, Indonesia, on 13–14 November 2025, under the framework of technical cooperation with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB).

The mission was conducted as part of the PTB cooperation project “Strengthening Quality Infrastructure Services for Environmental and Climate Monitoring, Indonesia.” The consultancy aimed to support national partners, including the National Measurement Standard – National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (SNSU-BSN) and environmental laboratories in Indonesia, in strengthening their capabilities to provide proficiency testing (PT) schemes for parameters relevant to industrial wastewater and surface water monitoring.

Building on the successful implementation of earlier activities, the consultancy specifically supported Pusarpedal, an Indonesian environmental laboratory, in preparing for a second proficiency testing scheme. During the on-site sessions, Dr. Nunnapus provided expert technical advice, shared best practices, and offered practical recommendations to enhance the robustness, reliability, and international alignment of PT organization and implementation.

This expert mission reflects NIMT’s continued commitment to international knowledge transfer and regional cooperation, contributing to improved environmental measurement quality and strengthened quality infrastructure in support of sustainable development and climate monitoring in Indonesia.

 

NIMT Participates in the 88th ASEAN COSTI Meeting to Strengthen Regional Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation

The National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT), led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Pornchai Suteerakune, Director of NIMT, participated in the 88th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI-88) and Related Meetings, held from 19–25 October 2025 at the Jubilee Prestige Hotel, Ratchadaphisek, Bangkok. The meeting was presided over by Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI).

The meeting served as a vital platform for exchanging policies and strengthening collaboration among ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste, as well as dialogue partners, to enhance regional capacity and promote sustainable growth through science, technology, and innovation (STI).

On 21 October, Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul officially launched the ASEAN Talent Mobility Platform (ATM), along with the ASEAN Regional Research Infrastructure Strategy and the Talent Management Hub — key initiatives under the ASEAN COSTI framework. These initiatives aim to promote the circulation of knowledge and expertise across the region, addressing the “brain drain” phenomenon and transforming it into “brain circulation,” thereby supporting sustainable regional development.

On 22 October, the formal COSTI-88 Meeting convened discussions on ASEAN’s STI policy directions and cooperation frameworks. Prof. Dr. Supachai highlighted the achievements of the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) over the past decade and emphasized the forthcoming APASTI 2026–2035, which envisions “an integrated, innovation-driven ASEAN” that enhances global competitiveness and fosters sustainable and inclusive growth across the region.

The participation of NIMT marks another significant step in reinforcing Thailand’s active role in regional STI cooperation, particularly in the field of metrology, which serves as the fundamental infrastructure for research, technological advancement, and industrial development. This contribution aligns with ASEAN’s collective goal of building an innovation-driven economy and society for a prosperous future.

 

NIMT Welcomes Delegation from the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO)

October 21, 2025 – Dr. Charun Yafa, Assistant Director of the National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT), together with NIMT executive and staffs, warmly welcomed Wing Commander (Eng) Ishaq Al Shammakhi and his team from the Calibration Center under the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO), Sultanate of Oman. The delegation visited NIMT to discuss technical cooperation and explore institute’s laboratories.

The visit aimed to support the establishment of a chemical metrology laboratory within the RAFO Calibration Center, enhance the competencies in the preparation and verification of certified reference materials, and develop specialized training courses for technical personnel in the field of chemical metrology. The discussion also included potential collaboration in proficiency testing (PT) programs and knowledge exchange on the operation of chemical laboratories in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 17034 standards.

This exchange provided NIMT with valuable insights into RAFO’s strategic direction and areas of mutual interest. The dialogue fostered opportunities for continued collaboration and knowledge sharing to promote metrology development and strengthen international partnership across the region.

NIMT attends the 24th meeting of NMI Directors and Member State Representatives

The Bureau International des poids et mesures (BIPM) is scheduled to host the 24th meeting of NMI Directors and Member State Representatives (PARTNERS) from October 16 to 17, 2025, at BIPM, France, which Mr. Anusorn Tonmueanwai, Deputy Director, represents NIMT at this meeting.

The meeting is the annual assembly of member countries, with the BIPM serving as the international metrology organization — effectively acting as the secretariat responsible for technical and scientific operations of the General Assembly of the Metre Convention.

Currently, BIPM comprises over 100 member states, associate states and economies, including Thailand, which is represented by the National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) – NIMT.

As a Member State to the Metre Convention, NIMT has the duty to attend the meeting in order to maintain Thailand’s membership status, contribute to BIPM’s policy formulation, and enhance Thailand’s leadership role in international metrology cooperation.

Additionally, NIMT aims to strengthen relationships and foster collaboration among National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), paving the way for the development of measurement standards through joint research and studies in the future.

NIMT Participates in M4DConf 2025 to Strengthen International Collaboration in Digital Metrology

The National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT), represented by Dr. Narin Chanthawong, Group Leader of Nano Metrology, and Ms. Sunantiya Parana, Metrologist from the Dimensional Metrology Department, attended the M4DConf 2025 (International Conference on Metrology and Digital Transformation) to present research work, exchange knowledge, and strengthen international collaboration networks in the field of digital metrology.

M4DConf 2025 is an international platform bringing together experts, researchers, and representatives from national metrology institutes, standard organizations, and industries worldwide to exchange ideas and experiences on the digital transformation. Key topics included Digital Calibration Certificates (DCC), data distribution through cloud systems, sensor networks for Industry 4.0/IoT, and data management practices aligned with the FAIR principles.

During the conference, Dr. Narin Chanthawong served as Session Chair in Session 3.2 – Advancing Sensor Network Metrology for Industry 4.0 and IoT Applications, focusing on the development of metrology for sensor network systems and industrial deployment. Ms. Sunantiya Parana presented her work titled “Digitalization of Calibration Workflow at the National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT)”, highlighting the digitalization of calibration processes and cloud-based data connectivity to enhance efficiency.

Participation in this conference not only enhanced knowledge and expertise of NIMT’s personnel in digital metrology, but also fostered international collaboration networks, created opportunities for collaborative research and standards, and stimulated the implementation of Digital-to-Cloud and DCC approaches in the calibration process. These efforts will support industry and cross-border trade while reinforcing NIMT’s role as a key player in the global metrology community.

The M4DConf 2025 was organized by IMEKO TC-6 in Benevento, Italy.

NIMT Strengthens Collaboration with NPL, UK, through VAMAS Meeting and Technical Cooperation

The National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT), led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Pornchai Suteerakune, Director of NIMT, visited the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), United Kingdom, during 15–17 September 2025. The visit was part of participation in the 50th Steering Committee Meeting of the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS), hosted at NPL in Teddington.

As part of the visit, NIMT’s delegation was warmly welcomed by Mr. Robert Gunn, Head of International at NPL, and the NPL team. A dedicated session was arranged to enhance bilateral cooperation between NIMT and NPL, featuring presentations on:
– Introduction to NPL, including strategy and secondments
– Digital overview
– Medical Physics overview
– Communications
– Tour of engineering workshop

This exchange provided NIMT with valuable insights into NPL’s strategic direction, research programmes, and areas of expertise in digital technology, medical physics, and engineering innovation. The discussions paved the way for potential collaboration and knowledge sharing to further advance metrology in Thailand and support international standardization efforts.

NIMT’s participation in the 50th VAMAS Steering Committee Meeting and the engagement with NPL reaffirm Thailand’s commitment to contributing to the global metrology and standards community while strengthening its international partnerships.

 

NIMT Strengthens International Collaboration with Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS), Germany

On 12 September 2025, the National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT), led by Pol.Lt.Gen. Pornchai Suteerakune, Director of NIMT, visited the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS) in Germany. The meeting was honored by the presence of Dr. Inge Paulini, President of BfS, who personally welcomed our Thai delegation.

The visit provided an important opportunity for both institutes to share knowledge and experiences in radiation protection and measurement standards. Key discussion topics included:
– Emergency preparedness in radiation-related scenarios
– Technical advances in medicine involving radiation applications
– Radon monitoring and control
– UV radiation impacts and protection
– Electromagnetic field measurement and safety

This visit underlines NIMT’s commitment to enhancing international cooperation and advancing Thailand’s capabilities in the field of radiation metrology, ensuring public health and safety while supporting technological progress.

NIMT Strengthens Scientific Cooperation with PTB in Germany

The National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT), led by Pol.Lt.Gen. Pornchai Suteerakune, Director of NIMT, visited the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Germany from September 9 to 13, 2025.

The visit aimed to enhance collaboration in key areas of metrology, with a strong focus on renewable energy, radiometry, and quantum technologies. These are topics of growing importance for both institutes as they contribute to advancing sustainable development and innovation in Asia and Europe.

During the program, the NIMT delegation was warmly welcomed by PTB’s President, Prof. Dr. Cornelia Denz, and Vice President, Dr. Frank Härtig. The delegation also engaged in fruitful discussions with PTB’s scientific experts, exploring opportunities for strengthening research cooperation and development partnerships across Asia.

A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to exchange knowledge directly with PTB researchers, paving the way for joint projects and long-term collaboration. The delegation also took part in PTB’s Open House Day, gaining insights into how advanced metrology is shared with the wider community.

NIMT greatly values its strong partnership with PTB, recognizing it as a foundation for advancing precision measurement, innovation, and regional development. This visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of both institutes to deepen scientific cooperation and drive progress in emerging fields of metrology.

NIMT Expert shares insights on Digital Transformation at the 4th China-ASEAN Standardization Cooperation Forum

Dr. Narin Chanthawong, Group Leader of Nano Metrology, National Metrology Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT) was invited as a speaker at the 4th China-ASEAN Standardization Cooperation Forum held on 27 August 2025 in Nanning, People’s Republic of China.

Under the theme “Innovation Cooperation in AI Standardization Empowers the Construction of China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future”, Dr. Narin delivered a presentation focusing on key areas: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its integration into metrology and standardization and the development of national measurement systems to support industry, innovation, and global competitiveness.

The forum served a strategic platform for knowledge exchange between China and ASEAN member states, promoting collaboration in emerging technologies and standardization efforts. NIMT’s contribution underscored Thailand’s active role in advancing metrology and supporting regional initiatives that aligned with sustainable growth and digital transformation.

Dr. Narin’s participation not only highlighted NIMT’s expertise in AI applications but also reinforced Thailand’s commitment to strengthening regional and international cooperation in standardization, particularly in areas addressing future industrial needs.
