NIMT Advances Laboratory Automation through Knowledge Exchange with Hong Kong’s Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL)

The National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT) is taking an important step towards advancing its metrology capabilities through automation and technological innovation. On 4 November 2026, Pol. Lt. Gen. Pornchai Suteerakune, Director of NIMT, led department heads and NIMT delegation on a technical visit to the Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL), Innovation and Technology Commission, Hong Kong, to explore SCL’s experience and practices in implementing automation in metrology laboratories.

The visit aimed to provide NIMT delegation involved in the development of laboratory automation with first-hand insights into how automation is integrated into practical metrology operations. Through laboratory tours and in-depth technical discussions with SCL experts, the NIMT delegation exchanged knowledge and explored approaches to applying automation across various metrology disciplines.

The programme covered a wide range of laboratories, including Length, Mass, Pressure, Temperature, Photometry and Radiometry, Electrical Metrology, Radio Frequency, Advanced Communications, Acoustics, Vibration, and Advanced Manufacturing. These sessions offered valuable opportunities for NIMT specialists to observe laboratory practices, exchange technical expertise, and gain a deeper understanding of the role of automation in modern metrology.

Beyond observing technologies and laboratory operations, the discussions focused on identifying practical approaches that NIMT could adapt and implement in its own laboratories. The knowledge exchange is expected to support more efficient laboratory workflows, improve operational processes, and strengthen NIMT’s readiness to meet the evolving demands of measurement science and emerging technologies.

This visit marks another significant milestone in NIMT’s commitment to continuous improvement and international knowledge exchange. By learning from SCL’s practical experience, NIMT aims to translate international best practices into tangible improvements, empowering its personnel and enhancing the capabilities of its laboratories through automation.

The visit also reinforces the longstanding relationship between NIMT and SCL, paving the way for closer and more practical cooperation in the future. Through continued collaboration and shared expertise, both institutes look forward to advancing metrology capabilities and contributing to innovation in an increasingly technology-driven world.
