Dr. Kanokwan Nontapot and Mr. Chanasorn Nutsathaporn, from NIMT, participated in a research attachment at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) from 2 May to 1 June 2026.
The research was conducted under the project of Development of Calibration Laboratories for Single-Photon Sources, Single-Photon Detectors, and Quantum Communication Devices for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Systems. The work took place within the Laser and Quantum Radiometry Working Group (4.54) at PTB’s Braunschweig campus.
During the attachment, the NIMT metrologists collaborated with PTB experts on the calibration and characterization of single-photon measurement standards, with a particular focus on InGaAs Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes (InGaAs-SPADs). The research activities included establishing a calibration system for fiber-optic single-photon detectors and evaluating key performance parameters such as detection efficiency, dead time, dark count rate, and after-pulsing characteristics.
The hands-on experience in advanced quantum radiometry and single-photon metrology enables the transfer of technical knowledge and best practices from PTB to NIMT. As part of the outcomes, a measurement procedure for determining the detection efficiency of InGaAs single-photon detectors was developed and documented for future implementation within NIMT’s laboratories, supporting the establishment of national capabilities in quantum measurement and calibration.

Their expertise, mentorship, and commitment to international collaboration greatly contributed to the success of the research activities and further strengthened the long-standing partnership between PTB and NIMT.
This research contributes to strengthening Thailand’s national measurement capabilities in quantum technologies and supports the development of metrological infrastructure for emerging applications in quantum communication and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). The collaboration also reinforces the strategic partnership between NIMT and PTB in advancing scientific research, innovation, and measurement excellence in support of future quantum technologies.
