NIMT – KCMH – SU moves forward to research for UV rays innovation to the psoriasis treatment

NIMT’s Department of Thermometry and Optical Metrology, Division of Dermatology Department of Internal Medicine King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital (KCMH) and Department of Physics Faculty of Sciences Silpakorn University (SU) join as a part of prototype and UV irradiance calibration measuring method research which it uses to evaluate the effectiveness of psoriasis treatment. The research focuses on the benefit of treatment, reduction of risk and side – effects, crowding in the hospital, and included treatment expense.

Psoriasis typically has treated by Narrowband UVB (NB – UVB). The results by NB – UVB treatment are satisfactory, but there are some limitations, for example; there are merely 30 NB – UVB machines in Thailand. Such as limitations cause crowding in the hospital because of the great number of patients is waiting in row. Furthermore, there is high risk that might occur if the machines were not in standard required. It sympathizes with the low-income patients who are probably unable to get to the treatment comfortably due to the high expenses.

Additionally, KCMH researchers have been initiative their experiments to use Helio-therapy for anti-psoriasis treatment which needs UV meter to anti-psoriasis effective UV irradiance measurement. Then, the researchers asked NIMT metrologists for joint research to build “Prototype innovation for UV irradiance measurement” to solve such research problems. The researchers designed a working function to control the treatment method. NIMT metrologists have developed UV irradiance measuring prototype since 2020. The development began from software writing, prototype search tools and calibration. Software trial will make confidence and match to user’s needs. However, the prototype is under the process of development. NIMT will upgrade it by wireless transfer data via Wi-Fi and output by semi-real time. Doctors, penitents, researchers and the people will be able to access required data suddenly. In the approaching future, the prototype will develop into portable versions which are friendly to use at home. If it done, the psoriasis patients would not necessary to come to the hospital often, but they still need doctors or dermatologists advice.
