The National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) (NIMT) has further strengthened Thailand’s role in the global metrology community by hosting a series of international meetings of experts in metrology in chemistry and biology from 19–22 October 2026 in Pathum Thani, Thailand. The meetings aimed to foster international collaboration in advancing measurement standards and capabilities for nucleic acids, proteins, and cells, ensuring accurate, reliable, and internationally comparable measurement results. In addition, NIMT organised an international workshop to explore the connection between advances in engineering biology and the role of metrology in supporting innovations for the future of food, with a focus on quality, safety, and consumer confidence.

The meetings were held under the framework of the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance: Metrology in Chemistry and Biology (CCQM), which operates under the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). CCQM plays a vital role in promoting collaboration among National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) and Designated Institutes (DIs) worldwide to advance measurement capabilities and ensure the international equivalence of measurement results under the framework of the International Committee for Weights and Measures Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA).

A key part of the programme comprised meetings of three CCQM Bioanalysis Working Groups: the Nucleic Acid Analysis Working Group (NAWG), the Protein Analysis Working Group (PAWG), and the Cell Analysis Working Group (CAWG), held on 19–20 October 2026. These were followed by the Joint Bioanalysis Meeting on 21 October 2026 at NIMT, located on Rangsit–Nakhon Nayok Road, Khlong 5, Pathum Thani.

The meetings provided an important platform for experts from leading metrology institutes around the world to exchange scientific developments, discuss the results of international measurement comparisons, and explore approaches to developing measurement methods and biological reference standards. These collaborative efforts aim to ensure that analytical results generated by laboratories in different countries are accurate, metrologically traceable, and internationally comparable. Such capabilities provide a critical foundation for medical diagnostics, the development of biological products, food quality and safety testing, and the advancement of modern biotechnology.

In addition to the technical meetings, NIMT organised an international workshop entitled “Engineering Biology for the Future of Food: Innovation, Measurement and Trust” on 22 October 2026 at Novotel Bangkok Future Park Rangsit, Pathum Thani. The workshop attracted more than 150 participants, bringing together researchers, metrology experts, and representatives from relevant sectors to explore how engineering biology and metrology can work together to support the future food industry. Discussions focused on emerging opportunities, technological challenges, and responsible approaches to innovation.

The workshop covered a range of emerging biotechnologies with the potential to transform the food industry. These included the application of synthetic biology to design and develop biological systems, the use of microorganisms and bioprocesses to produce food ingredients and alternative proteins, and the development of cell-cultivated meat. These innovations have the potential to diversify food production, improve resource efficiency, and contribute to global food security in the future.

However, translating these technologies from laboratory research into industrial-scale production presents several challenges, particularly in quality control, safety, product consistency, and the accurate and transparent verification of product information. The workshop therefore highlighted the essential role of reliable measurement systems, reference standards, and collaboration among research institutions, industry, and metrology organisations. These elements are fundamental to supporting the development of innovative products whose quality and safety can be independently verified, ultimately building consumer confidence and public acceptance.

Hosting these international meetings marks another significant milestone for Thailand in strengthening its presence in the international metrology community. It also provides valuable opportunities for Thai scientists and researchers to exchange knowledge with leading international experts and establish further cooperation in research and development of measurement methods, the production of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), and international measurement comparisons. These activities will help enhance the capabilities of Thai laboratories and support the development of high-technology industries.

NIMT remains committed to strengthening Thailand’s national metrology infrastructure to keep pace with advances in science and technology, particularly in biotechnology and future food innovations, which are important drivers of the Bioeconomy. Through continued engagement with international metrology networks, including CCQM and the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP), NIMT aims to reinforce the country’s National Quality Infrastructure (NQI), foster innovation, enhance the competitiveness of Thai industries, and build lasting confidence in the quality and safety of products for a sustainable future.
