      National Measurement System (NMS) is a primary importance for any industrialized countries since it is a prerequisite for science and technology development and implementation. NMS plays an integral role in assuring the accuracy, consistency, comparability and reliability of measurement results by ensuring that they are traceable to the national measurement standards, and, hence, are traceable to the definitions of the SI units.<\/p>\n

      Traceable to national measurement standards is also used as a key measure by the international standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO\/IEC 17025, to ensure technical reliability of the quality management system. Hence, NMS is a scientific, economic and social necessity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

      NIMT is Thailand\u2019s National Metrology Institute. It is an ASEAN most advanced NMI and one of Asia\u2019s centres of excellence in developing measurement standards and measurement methods for the benefit of industry, trade, society and science.<\/p>\n

      NIMT was established by the National Metrology System Development Act B.E.2540 and was founded on 1 June 1998 as a public autonomous agency under supervision of the Ministry of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n

      NIMT is entrusted by the law to establish, develop, and maintain the national measurement standards, in all disciplines, and to disseminate their accuracy and standards and norms, to measurement activities carried out in the country. It has also been tasked to promote metrology related professions.<\/p>\n

      Developing and maintaining measurement standards and providing calibration services are, therefore, NIMT\u2019s core competences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

      Accurate measurement improves productivity and quality; it underpins consumer confidence and trade. NIMT undertakes research to improve its measurement capability and shares this expertise with public organisations, private sectors and society to help enhance economic performance, and the quality of life.<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Calibration Service: NIMT provides a wide range of calibration services in the fields of dimensional metrology, mechanical metrology, time and frequency metrology, electrical metrology, thermometry, photometry and radiometry, chemical metrology and biometry. NIMT also provides reference materials. The calibration services and reference materials were reviewed by internationally accepted peers, according to international accepted protocols. Most of them are annexed to the Global CIPM-MRA, which is signed by all major industrialised countries and trade partners of Thailand. Thus, calibration certificates provided by MINT for the services are globally and mutually accepted.<\/li>\n
      2. Training, Workshops & Seminars: NIMT supplies and transfers knowledge and know-how to metrology community both at national and regional levels through its extensive annual training programmes and series of special workshops and seminars. The aim of the trainings and workshops is to provide necessary theoretical and practical knowledge on particular measurement standards and techniques to staff of calibration laboratories and industry sectors.<\/li>\n
      3. Consulting Services: NIMT provides consultation to industry sector in order to assist them in their implementation of metrological related tools to improve their productivity and product or in their handling of specific measurement systems. Consulting services are also available for calibration laboratories as well.<\/li>\n
      4. Information Services: NIMT provides information in terms of metrological knowledge, calibration techniques and innovative measurement information in order to raise awareness and visibility of metrology in the public.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

        \n\t\t\t\t\t\tORGANISATION\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

        In order to carry out tasks entrusted to it by law and to fulfil expectations of the society effectively, NIMT has to equip itself with scientific and technical knowledge, and a number of other skills and tools; for examples policy and strategy making skill, modern administrative and resource management tools including skill to implement them. This necessity leads to an organisation structure that consists of both technical part and non-technical part. The technical part comprises a number of metrology departments enough to cover all measurement disciplines.<\/p>\n

        As of 2013, NIMT employs around 200 staff; about two-third are scientists and engineers. NIMT operates two laboratory buildings; one in Pathumthani, a town north of Bangkok, and the other in Bangkok. In 2015, another laboratory building in Pathumthani, specially designed for Certified Reference Materials production, will be completed.<\/p>\n

        NIMT\u2019s Calibration Laboratory implements the quality system ISO\/IEC 17025, while the administrative and supporting departments implement ISO 9001.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

        Phadung-metra Building is a 11,000 square-metre laboratory building that provides a controlled environment with stable temperature and humidity levels, and minimized interference from vibration and electrical and magnetic fields to 47 laboratories.<\/p>\n

        Phadung-matra Building means the building that bears and supports measurement activities. It is an ingenious name given to NIMT\u2019s main laboratory building by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Her Royal Highness also bestowed the highest kindness to NIMT by presiding over the grand opening ceremony of the building on 14 August 2006.<\/p>\n

        With the awareness on the importance of the dissemination of the accuracy of measurement value from national standard to calibration laboratories and from calibration laboratories to industrial sectors, NIMT coordinates for domestic cooperation and a number of initiatives to strengthen measurement capability of calibration laboratories. One of the main and most important cooperation is to organise laboratory comparisons at national level or provide reference values for such comparisons organised and piloted by other organisations. NIMT has also initiated and taken part in so-called metrology clubs. This initiative is aimed to provide discussion platform for metrology related bodies, public and activity plans and to update and share metrology knowledge with one another.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

        International cooperation plays a vital role in NIMT history. Many international cooperation projects have supported and facilitated development of NIMT\u2019s staff and infrastructure. Thus, NIMT recognizes importance of the cooperation. NIMT cooperates with bodies and organisations related to metrology in all bilateral, multilateral, regional and international levels. NIMT is a member of Asia-Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) and has participated in the CIPM-Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM-MRA) with keen interests. Under APMP, NIMT is among the founder members of the Developing Economies\u2019 Committee (APMP-DEC). It hosted two APMP General Assembly and Related Meeting in 2000 and 2010.<\/p>\n
